Ebook Readers

on Tuesday, February 19, 2013
I bought Moon+ Reader a few months back and had found myself finishing up a book and wanting to "rearrange the furniture" so to speak so I googled and started looking at different readers just to see what was out there.  Side note: Moon+ is 50% off right now so if you're on the fence it's completely worth the $5 I paid, so grab it while it's $2.50.

Aldiko's Shelf
The one that caught my eye was Aldiko.

So I tried it out for the 2 or 3 bucks and was sorely disappointed.

To start with, it has a more...I don't know..."Kindle For Android" look to it.  But that's where any positive comparisons end, for me.  If that's even a positive, it's merely an aesthetic.

Maybe it's my device (ASUS Transformer Prime TF201-B1) or a collection of 442 books or the app itself but it took over twenty minutes to import my books. The screen timeout on my device is set to 10 minutes and, to keep the process from stopping, I had to tap the screen twice (the second time being at about 97% completion). So that was pretty annoying.  Moon+ had imported and organized my entire collection in, literally, under a minute.

While playing with Aldiko I noticed that it lacks a set of features I find to be the most important of all.

Mmmm...pretty.
The type of reading I do (WWII, The Crusades, high concept thriller writers like Brad Thor, Vince FlynnLee Child, Andy McNab, Douglas Preston, Baldacci, Rollins, Connelly, Mills etc etc...the Alpha Males of today's writing) contains a lot of references to historic figures, military, equipment, weaponry and dates.  Moon+ Reader comes with numerous dictionaries and the ability to highlight text in order to either look it up on Google or view, for example, the MH-53j Pave Low's Wikipedia entry - because I'm not nearly as smart as these guys.  I'm willing to lift my W***pedia embargo in this case. Moon+ allows you to google instead of going straight to the Liberal online "encyclopedia" as well, so that's good.  But uhm...back to the lecture at hand (SWIDT?)

Moon+ also allows you to create links on a word or passage.  This allows you  will bring you out to said wiki entry, website or definition.  You can also "mark-up" a page with notes.

This is really only two features I've listed.  Moon+ Reader is filled to the absolute brim with bells and whistles for those of us that like to push buttons.  But it also "just works" for those that aren't as technical.  You can really tell it's a labor of love for the author.

So unless I missed those features in Aldiko I think any reader that can't do those things completely under-utilize the technology afforded us/them and are no better than the standard paperback.

And there's nothing wrong with a good old paperback.

When Women Were Women and Men Were Men - Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly

I still don't know what Read Window is about because every time Grace is on screen I'm stunned.  Grace Kelly was absolutely gorgeous.  This movie in particular is on of my favorites.

Where Is John Wayne?

This country is filled with selfish, spoiled narcissists.  And that's just the kids.

Our children aren't disciplined and our children's parents are failures.  They teach them nothing outside of "You're a special little angel".  They give them no life skills or common sense.  They learn to be special little narcissists by their special little narcissistic parents.

We need John Wayne back. Not just John Wayne the man, but the John Wayne way of life that was the norm when he was around.  And the lessons he taught us.

These kids then grow up and become adults with no idea what it means to be an adult, then pass that on to their own children.  We have turned ourselves into a perpetual group of children spawning children.

"Wait until your Dad get's home" used to mean discipline.  Now it means a sit-down talk about sensitivity and "making right choices".

Here's what a kid should see when "Dad gets home"...

That walk is what they should see.

Everything with our children is a diagnosis. Everything's an emergency. Everything is something for parents to become addicted to government assistance and drain the system.

Everyone thinks their kid is special and different. This isn't to say that a child isn't one of the most amazing gifts one can be given. But we need to give them the skills they need to grow up and become adults. Real adults that are then equipped to give to their children the skills needed to be real adults as well.

I'll leave you with this:

Shannon Sharpe Is A Bigoted Moron

Shannon Sharpe
After the http://www.cbscorporation.com/contact.php vs Ravens game on CBS yesterday, Shannon "The Spitting Stalker" Sharpe was apparently absolutely disgusted with the behavior of Patriots coach Bill Belichick.  You see, Belichick didn't give a television interview to CBS after their devastating loss.  Sharpe took great offense to this "unsportsmanlike" behavior.
"Bill Belichick makes it very easy for you to root against the Patriots. You can't be a poor sport all the time. You're not going to win every time. And he does this every time he loses. It is unacceptable."
Maybe it's me but this makes no sense what-so-ever.  What I saw with mine own eyes was Coach Belichick going directly out onto the field to congratulate players, shake hands and give a hug and congratulatory pep-talk to Coach Harbaugh.  Stop me when you notice the unsportsmanlike behavior.

It even appeared as if Belichick spent an inordinate amount of time seeking out Coach Harbaugh to ensure he was able to applaud his victory.

After that, he walked off the field and into the bowels of Gillette Stadium.

Anything unsportsmanlike yet?

Coaches are contractually obligated to give press conferences, not television interviews.  If someone wants to talk to someone else on TV it's his or her own choice.

Still nothing.

So...

You can dislike, hate, despise, whatever Belichick all you want.  But please have the ability to see past your like/dislike for the guy and realize this for what it is.  That is what I want to get across the most.  You can hate Brady, call them cheaters, call them everything you want. But don't let the media choose for you. Think for yourself...because their agenda and your agenda are two different things.

This is the media, jocksniffers that they are, getting snubbed.

The talking heads, ex-players or not, are now members of the media.  They are not coaches anymore.  They're no longer quarterbacks.  They're no longer making great catches, and Shannon made many of those, along the sideline, anymore.  They have no affect on the game and have no input into how coaches coach or how players play.

All they can do is talk about it.

So when one of their members doesn't get an interview, it has nothing whatsoever to do with sports.  It has everything to do with ego, ratings and attention.  Not having Belichick on TV made the telecast better or worse, depending upon your perspective.

Obviously in CBSSports.'s perspective, and most importantly Shannon Sharpe's perspective it made their television program worse.

But remember, it has nothing to do with sports.  It has everything to do with ratings.  Make no mistake about it...you and I both (I hope there's a you out there reading this) know that, for broadcasting networks it all boils down to ratings.  Every last thing they put in front of you is to boost their ratings.  Everything.

So, do not be fooled that this has anything to do with sports.  It just happened to be a sports program they were putting in front of you.  That and the fact that they think they are part of the actual game taking place on the field.

Moving on, to what really is offensive.  Is how Shannon couldn't let the game go, even the next day.  And how he needed to lash out more at all things Patriots.  No one was going to get out of his sights.

Anna Burns Welker
Wes Welker's wife Anna, left, posted on her Facebook page that she was proud of her husband.

She also went on to say that Ray Lewis, having paid off the families of murder victims Richard Lollar and Jacinth Baker reached a court settlement while escaping a murder charge,  is the sperm donor for 6 children with 4 different women, is no role model and sarcastically mentions his Hall of Fame chances.
Proud of my husband and the Pats By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!
Shannon didn't like that.  It appears Shannon doesn't like it when women speak out of turn.

Here's what Sha-NON tweeted out today.

In closing, if I'm sick to my stomach while I watch Ray Lewis dance, scream, preach about God and Jesus watching over him, acting all humble and Christlike...I can only imagine what the Lollar and Baker families are going through this week.

Football is an escape for us.  We root for the "good guys" and we hope the "bad guys" lose.  But there really is no good or bad guy, in most cases, it's just laundry.

But there really is a bad guy here.

While you Raven's fans are sitting at home enjoying the Super Bowl, wearing your $100 Lewis jerseys idolizing him and cheering him on.

Please, please think about these families.

Then examine your conscience.

Wallpaper Of The Moment

on Wednesday, January 9, 2013
I love nice wallpapers.

On a 1920x1080 resolution LED monitor, a great hi-res wallpaper can give you momentary pause as you sit at your desk before firing open your applications and starting the day.

Most of my wallpaper choices fall into 4 categories:

  • Photography
  • Patriotic
  • Geek
  • Movie

Today's wallpaper is of the Photography genre.

This image is 1920x1080 resolution and is magnificent in color and tone.  I used the word tone because it felt right.  I don't really know what it means.  Maybe I meant mood.

Unless he's studying "Contraband - How To Manufacture Prison Tattoo Guns: Plus Cash To Marlboro Conversion Charts" his educational track will be a dead end.
